Prokineticin 1 and leukemia inhibitory factor mRNA expression in the endometrium of women with idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss

Abstract:

Objective:
To determine the expression patterns of prokineticin 1 (PROK1) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) mRNA differ in peri-implantation endometrial tissue of women with idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) from normal fertile women.

Design:
A case-control study.

Setting:
University-based tertiary care center.

Patient(s):
30 women with idiopathic RPL and 30 fertile controls.

Intervention(s):
Endometrial biopsies.

Main Outcome Measure(s):
Real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis for expression of PROK1 and LIF mRNA.

Result(s):
The expression of PROK1 and LIF was statistically significantly increased in the endometrium of the women with idiopathic RPL compared with the controls. Furthermore, increased LIF expression was observed in the endometrium of women with idiopathic RPL compared with controls.

Conclusion(s):
An increased mRNA expression of PROK1 and LIF could be one of the several abnormalities characterizing the endometrium in women with RPL.

    Thank you to the authors for a very interesting study highlighting the role of Prokineticin 1 in recurrent pregnancy loss. I kindly had two questions for the co-authors. One, are there plans for future experiments that confirm PROK1 protein expression in the endometrium of the RPL subjects? In addition, given the recent article by Su et. al in the same issue of Fertility and Sterility also highlighting the importance of PROK1 (also known as endocrine gland derived vascular endothelial growth factor) and PROK1 receptor, are there plans for future experiments to also evaluate PROK1 receptor expression in the endometrium?
