I read with great interest Dr. Barnhart’s challenging arguments about placebo effects and false advertisement in our field. I recently gave Grand Rounds on the same issue in which I reviewed a number of heavily advertised products and procedures that lack any reasonable scientific evidence for their claims, but are often costly to the patients and some have been demonstrated to be harmful. My colleagues were surprised and concerned that ASRM does not issue Committee Opinions or Guidelines for practice when supplements and/or unproven procedures are being advertized to patients as well as to physicians. What would be the best approach to urge ASRM to start reviewing false advertisements in our field and issuing opinion statements that can help us maximize evidenced based practice of REI?
